DataBalk B.V.

Software for housing associations, and the move to .NET

Software Developer

Oct 1998 – Nov 2004

DataBalk built software for Dutch housing associations. In six years there I designed and built standard products, custom software and integrations with the systems of its clients.

DataBalk's move to .NET started with my prototype. Its housing allocation software was a Visual Basic 6 application that was hard to change and to install. When .NET appeared, I built a prototype on the first beta, and DataBalk chose this application as the first product to move. .NET was so new that we built much of what later came with .NET 2.0 ourselves, such as frameworks and controls.

Much of the other work was about connecting systems. KIS Vensters brings information from different systems together in one screen for call centers. Other products generated and archived documents from the core administration, and managed printing for Word from one central place. For clients I built integrations, conversions and data warehouses, rebuilt a suite of dBase applications in Visual Basic, and built websites for housing associations.

As a Software Developer, my responsibilities included:

  • Rebuilding the housing allocation application in ASP.NET and VB.NET, from prototype to product
  • Designing and building standard products and custom applications for housing associations
  • Building integrations, conversions and data warehouses for client systems
  • Implementing the products at clients
